Rajya Sabha Member Sudha Murty faced significant backlash on social media after her post linking Rakshabandhan’s origins to Mughal emperor Humayun.

In a video, Murty stated, “Raksha Bandhan has a rich history. When Rani Karnavati was in peril, she sent a thread to King Humayun as a symbol of siblinghood, requesting his aid. This is where the tradition of the thread began, continuing to this day.”

Her remarks provoked a flurry of criticism from netizens. Some labeled her account as “fake,” with one user stating, “Stop propagating JNU-inspired fake history,” and another dismissing it as “absolute rubbish.”

Other users advised Murty to educate herself further on Indian traditions. One comment read, “If you believe in this fabricated story, it shows a lack of understanding of Indian festivals and culture. I regret recommending your children’s books; they don’t need to learn this manufactured tale. Learn about Draupadi’s Raksha Sutra for Srikrishna and the true significance of Shravan Poornima.”

Rakshabandhan, a festival celebrating the bond between siblings, is observed on the full moon day of Shravan in the Hindu calendar. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers’ wrists, symbolizing their love and prayers for their brothers’ long lives.

A user Abhinav Bharat wrote “Story of Karnavati-Humayun Rakhi is fiction floated by leftist marxist historians as lalit sahitya to shamefully exploit Bharat’s dharmic festivity & burden Hindu with secular sarva dharma adage ignoring no such event ever happen. Rana Sangha’s Queen united Sidodias to fight back.”

Another user wonderer wrote ” Can you kindly shut up. Hindu women asking Muslim invaders for protection in Mughal times is a notion like Osama bin Laden preaching peace to the world.”

A user named Rangarajan Narasimhan wrote ” Mrs. SudhaMurty. What is the source of this story?! I am not sure why you must invent stories like these, which is actually putting in doubt every single practice of Sanathana Dharma!! For some one of your stature, you must provide historical proof for such, you can easily do that with the amount of money you have. But you chose to come on camera, and sit in a neat posture to read from a teleprompter. Are you in trouble?! If you need help, do let know. I can help you!!!! I know you are getting trolled for this already but I if you are serious of such “stories”, why dont you come out with the proof of the same?! What are you gaining by doing such a “story”!!!
